Mental Health First Aid - the facts
We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. Mental ill health can strike at any time and affect people from all walks of life.
Mental Health issues are common 1 in 4 of us in the UK will experience at least one diagnosable mental health issue in any one year (Mental Health Task Force, 2017)
Suicide is the biggest killer of men aged 20 to 49 (Office for National Statistics 2009).
Mental illness is the second largest burden of disease in England. Mental illnesses are more common, long lasting and impactful than other health conditions (Public Health England, 2019).


Building a mentally healthy workplace
It is estimated that 70 million working days are lost each year due to mental ill health in the UK. This has a financial cost of 2.4 billion pounds each year.
Stress, anxiety and depression are the biggest cause of sickness absence in our society (Health and Safety Executive, 2017).
The ultimate aim is to prevent people from becoming unwell, for those who do organisations have a duty of care and legal obligations to protect health and safety and welfare of employees (Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974).
The Equality Act 2010 protects people with disabilities from unfair treatment, this includes many people with mental health issues.
